H.P. Takes Five is a cheeky take on Henry Purcell's famous trumpet tune. Instead of 4/4 time, it's in 5/4, with a few 7/4 measures thrown in for a bit more fun! Purcell (1659–95) wrote much incidental music for plays and so-called semi-operas performed in London's theaters, and often included a trumpet tune as a signal for the next act. A trumpet was the only instrument that could be heard above the noise of the audience!
As usual in my pieces, the lead moves around the parts, and so this is indicated to make sure that the appropriate line remains prominent. Pay attention to all the tenuto and staccato marks. Make sure that the ff dynamics in measures 26, 42, 52, and at the end are as loud as you can get them without overblowing. The fluid lines of the lyrical middle section will test your powers of concentration. All three trombone players will need to practice their lip trills.
This piece was originally conceived for two trumpets, two trombones, and bass trombone. For conventional brass quintets, an alternative F horn part is included instead of 1st trombone. Although the bass trombone part is playable on tuba, you may have to reconsider the mutes at the beginning, as removing a tuba mute in the time available could be tight. In my view, a euphonium might be a better choice if a bass trombone is not available. (A euphonium mute can be removed in time.)
