God Is Our Refuge and Strength is an original handbell setting that references Psalm 46 It opens with a flourishing, rhythmic introduction based on material that recurs throughout the piece, offering opportunities to teach ringers rhythmic precision and musical ringing. A center section, based on the fourth verse of the Psalm, is quiet and flowing, reflecting the words, "There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God." After a return to the beginning material, the piece builds to an exciting, uplifting conclusion that makes it appropriate for festive occasions in church, school and festival settings. The optional parts for flute, trumpet, SATB choir, children’s choir and piano are delightful additions.
