1. FANFARE. A short introduction, featuring trumpets, horns and trombones. 2. CHANT SERIEUX. This slow movement is characterised by a constant shifting of the five-to-the-bar time. 3. SCHERZO CONCERTANTE. The 'concertante parts' are written for the trumpet register. In the middle of the movement a folksong from the southern part of the Netherlands appears 'Wel Annea! marieke waar gaat gij naar toe'. (Annemarieke where are you going?). 4. MOTIONS. This movement is mainly based on short consecutive notes, divided into groups of 8, 9 and 10 notes each. Shifting accents, dynamic climaxes and effective use of percussion give this movement an enerving character.
