Five Orchestral Scenes was written to be performable by a community orchestra with strong wind and brass players. The outer movements are extroverted and suggest community. “Gathering” has a spirited, brassy, and processional character, with a dignified, lyrical middle section. “Festival” is an outgoing and kaleidoscopic movement that is mostly flamboyant and celebratory. The inner three movements are personal and introspective, evoking more fragile, private states of mind: “Nightscape,” brooding and sparse; “Quarrel,” a sardonic scherzo; and “Evening Shadows,” a long-lined aria that begins in the violins and suggests a feeling of solitude.
