Learn techniques used by great New Orleans pianists via the great old spiritual, Down by the Riverside.

Here's a recipe for cooking up the same distinctive gumbo that the great New Orleans pianists have been playing since the 1940's. After a bit of background on Afro-Cuban rhythmic influences, you will learn the ingredients of the rhumba boogie style originated by New Orleans piano legend, Professor Longhair.

Then, in part 2, you will understand how pianist Dr. John mixed rhumba figures with the toe-tapping second line rhythms associated with post-funeral New Orleans marching bands.

The booklet ends with a fully notated early-advanced solo piano arrangement of Down by The Riverside suitable for recitals and/or church celebrations.

This product was created by a member of ArrangeMe, Hal Leonard’s global self-publishing community of independent composers, arrangers, and songwriters. ArrangeMe allows for the publication of unique arrangements of both popular titles and original compositions from a wide variety of voices and backgrounds.
