By Dionne Warwick. By Burt Bacharach. Arranged by Des McNutty. Soul. Score and parts. 16 pages. Des Press #6445803. Published by Des Press (A0.977356).

Do you Know the Way to San Jose was written for Dionne Warwick and featured on her album Dionne Warwick in Valley of the Dolls in 1968. It became her biggest hit so far; selling over 3, 500, 000 copies worldwide and securing her first Grammy award, for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, in 1969. Warwick herself thought it was "a dumb song".

This arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription. Muted backings and pizzicato in the cello give an "easy-listening" feel. It is in the same tonalities as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun.

The level is on the easier side of "advanced"; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students.

Enjoy!
