Published by Flavio Regis Cunha (A0.597467)."Va, pensiero", also known as the "Choir of Hebrew Slaves", is a choir from the third act of the opera Nabucco (1842) by Giuseppe Verdi, with libretto by Temistocle Solera, inspired by Psalm 137. Known as the work of art Verdi's "Jew", the choir recalls the story of Jewish exiles in Babylon after the loss of the First Temple in Jerusalem.
The opera, with its powerful chorus, made Verdi famous as one of the greatest Italian composers of the 19th century. The complete entry says "Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate", which means "Go, thought, on the golden wings".
Some scholars initially claimed that the choir was intended to be a hymn for Italian patriots, who sought to unify their country and free it from foreign control in the years before 1861.
