Here’s another classic Larry Clark work for string orchestra, containing all of the musical traits that have made his music so popular, such as strong melodic content and a fresh harmonic perspective. This would be a strong choice for festival performance to make a developing string group sound its best.
Conviction is a piece that is designed for beginning strings. It contains simple rhythmic figures for this level. I set out to write an upbeat type of a piece that is like contest/festival pieces the students will encounter later on in their time in orchestra.  This piece begins with a fanfare type of theme with some more contemporary harmonies than you usually find in pieces at this level. I am a big believer in expanding the listening skills of young students right away and it makes it much more enjoyable to play when they like the sounds of the piece. This introductory material is used throughout the piece to give it unity. The piece moves on to complete the fanfare-like idea and then an ostinato begins in the violins. The main theme of the piece is first stated in unison under the ostinato and then again with the full orchestra. The next section of the piece contains material from the opening fanfare in diminution with the lower voices providing fragments of the main theme between these fanfare statements. The fanfare material returns, but now in a more legato fashion. This is followed by the full orchestra performing the fanfare material again and then building to the last full statement of the main theme. The fanfare material returns once again to close the piece in dramatic fashion. It is my goal to stimulate all of the sections of the orchestra by providing them with parts that are interesting to play and integral to overall composition. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your studentsenjoy it and find it useful for your program.-LARRY CLARKLakeland, FL 2013.
