Julius Klengel was one of the most renowned cello teachers of his time. He was 1st solo cellist of the Leipzig Gewandhaus and taught at the local conservatory. His instructional works and compositions remained popular even after his death because, despite varying technical demands on the performers, they always satisfy the musical demands of the audience. Concertino No. 1 in C major op. 7 is dedicated to his student Hans Patzki and consists of three movements: An Allegro in sonata form opens the little concerto, in the middle is a calmer Andante in the classical style, and a dance-like Rondo with tempo indication Vivace forms the virtuoso conclusion.
