Composed by Kunc/Latona. Festive setting of a Latin text with Vatican melody. General. Score. Published by CanticaNOVA Publications (C5.5292-S).

Anyone who has heard Vatican Radio knows the familiar theme that introduces the day's programming. It is a simple melody by Jan Kunc (1883-1976), a Czech composer, teacher and author. Kunc was also the director of the Brno Conservatory, established by Leos Janacek in 1919. His tune was found in the popular Saint Gregory Hymnal, harmonized by Rev. Nicola Montani. Dr. Peter Latona, Director of Music at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC, has arranged this melody for SATB, organ and brass quintet [2 trumpets, horn, 2 trombones] and timpani, very much in "Shrine" style. The text, "Christus vincit! Christus regnat! Christus imperat!" (Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ rules) is used on festive occasions, like ordinations, reception of the bishop, church dedications, etc. The familar Kunc melody occurs as a refrain, and two choral verses offer prayers for the Pope and the local Ordinary. This new CNP version is our first product to include our new Holy Father, Pope Francis' name (in the first verse). There are also three sample versions given for the second verse, one for an archbishop, one for a bishop and one for an abbot. Extremely easy for choir and instrumentalists, this piece is an effective way to heighten the solemnity of a festive Mass, and makes a wonderful processional for any diocesan or episcopal liturgy!
