Victor Kalinnikov (18701927) remains one of the unsung heroes of the great Russian choral school of the early 20th century. Every one of his relatively small output of 24 sacred choruses is a miniature, subtly crafted gem. This setting of the Cherubic Hymn, in particular, displays two contrasting sides of Kalinnikov's choral palette: muted, almost impressionistic pastels in the first part, and bright, bold primary colors in the closing Allegro section.
