I can remember the time when I first heard this beautiful song, with a dancer at a youth theatre production. I was totally blown away! Written by Sia Furler and Jesse Hatkin, it was nominated for four Grammys in 2014 and the music video is one of the most viewed Youtube videos ever posted!

I transposed the key up by a semitone into B minor to make it easier for strings, and most of the double stopping includes at least one open string. As a cellist myself, I wanted to include a dramatic solo, because so often, in my experience, the cellist has a less interesting part. However, I am including two versions, with a lower octave solo for the cello at letter F, bar 73. For this to work, the first violin will need to play from a very slightly different part, included in the sheet music. I’m not sure which sounds best actually. The upper octave has all the drama, but the lower octave provides a nice contrast from the intensity. You decide! Keep two versions in your pads!

This is one of my favourite arrangements and you can view a professional quartet play it live at my Youtube Channel, Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, Chandelier. In this version prepare to be amazed by the cellist. She is playing the ‘easy version’ up an octave! This another option. However, it is a very brave option. Most will want either to play the lower version, or have the first violin take the high G in the tenor clef version ! I will include both cello parts in the ‘Look Inside’ section of the upload.

Since the recording, when I changed the opening dynamic to mezzo forte, I have decided to have the first violin playing arco. Feel free to change it if you want to. The viola solo is also slightly different as I kept changing my mind about which verse to annotate. I have put in lyrics with the two opening verses, which I hope will help with interpretation. Don’t take the notes too literally, but listen to how the singer Sia does it first. The bowing is only a guide, so feel free to use lots of bow changes if it helps you to play it like a rock star!

You can hear Capriccio Quartet play some of my other arrangements at my Skinny Black Dogs Youtube Channel. Most of them are available from Sheet Music Plus. Send me any recordings you do of the piece even if it is just on your phone. I can be reached on Facebook messenger very easily.
