This arrangement is in the key of C Major and so retains the integrity of the Prelude in C, by J.S. Bach, above which Gounod placed his melody. Contrary to the Baroque style, however, the pianist should freely use the damper pedal and infuse much rubato into the piece to best emulate the romanticism of Gounod's style.
