Sung to bid farewell to the old year, it is also often heard at funerals or graduations. Many branches of the Scouting movement use it to close jamborees. It is even used as a signal that a retail store is about to close for the day. Due to its symbolism, it is also frequently featured in film soundtracks.
Auld Lang Syne is also associated with Christmas - which is certainly a special case of new beginning.
