Published by David Leech (A0.973278).Arriving Soon was composed by blues singer and alto saxophonist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson in the early 1960s. In 1962 he recorded it together with the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. It has since been recorded again by Cannonball and several other artists. In the 1970s I was asked by Eddie Vinson to write this arrangement to feature him with a big band. Trumpeter Buddy Childers recorded this arrangement of Arriving Soon with his own big band for his 2000 CD release Just Buddy’s, featuring Mike Smith on the alto solo and an all-star array of Chicago musicians.
This arrangement starts with an unaccompanied rubato statement of the plaintive minor blues melody by the alto. Then the bass kicks the band into high gear and it’s off to the races. The alto soloist gets to really stretch out on this modally (dorian) based blues. There is also a brief trombone solo and a challenging sax soli section. After a "shout" ensemble builds to a climax the alto returns to take it out with another statement of the melody interspersed with a cadenza.
Instrumentation: alto sax soloist plus the standard big band: five saxes (a,a,t,t,b), five trumpets, four trombones, guitar, piano, bass & drums. This makes a total of six saxophones, but it can be effectively played with five.
Both full score and parts are included.
The main difficulty is the quick tempo (quarter=210). Brass parts are not terribly high. At the climax the lead trumpet is playing around high D for about 8 bars.
