This African-American spiritual, especially appropriate for Holiday concert use, became well-known when it was featured on folk singer Odetta's best-selling Christmas album of 1963. Carey's setting features a soulful soprano solo (as well as a shorter tenor solo) with expressive support by the choir for the verses, and then shifts into a gently syncopated chorus with lush extended harmonies, which, via repetition, becomes the lullaby for the Child.
