Composed by Martin Luther. Arranged by G. R. Adkison. Christian,Sacred. Score and parts. 16 pages. Gary Ray Adkison #38695. Published by Gary Ray Adkison (A0.953743).

This is an ensemble arrangement of the Martin Luther hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God", arranged for 2 trumpets, F Horn and trombone. It includes a Director’s score, a non-transposing master score (for a director who may prefer all the instruments on his score to be in the same key) an individual part for the 2 trumpets, an individual part for the trombone, and an individual F Horn part which also has a trombone part on it, so that the ensemble can use 2 trombones, if desired, instead of a horn and 1 trombone. It starts with one trumpet and one trombone playing a brief round through the first two musical phrases. Then, it shifts to a new key (with no modulation) and uses a more standard ensemble method through the end of the first verse. There is a brief (2 beat) modulation into the key of the second verse. The time signature also changes from 4/4 to 6/8. The first two musical phrases employ a funky harmony, similar to the way an organ sounds when there is fifth interval coupling (such as is often used when an organ plays external bells in a tower). This gives way to more traditional harmony through the rest of that verse. From that time on, most of the second verse resembles the first, except for the different timing. However, the last musical phrase of the verse reverts to 4/4, in a half-time mode, for a more majestic ending. There is an apparent start-up of a third verse, which, after one measure, immediately changes keys into a coda, which starts out repeating that first measure in a higher key, going into an ending which is not similar to any part of the original hymn. The first verse and the ending are arranged anthem style, while the second verse is more mellow (softer and a more relaxed feel). Can be played with 2 trumpets, F horn and trombone, or with 2 trumpets and 2 trombones, with music provided for either choice, in the overall package of parts and scores. This is probably a level 2 degree of difficulty arrangement. The audio clip provided is in midi voices. Obviously, the real brass instruments will sound much better!).
