Christopher Idle. Matthew 26:36-56, Mark 14:32-42, Luke 22:39-46, John 18:1.

Especially meaningful during the days of Holy Week, this Christopher Idle text relates to our Lord praying in the garden of Gethsemane, and weaves around the 'tree' theme found in many Scriptures about the cross. Lloyd Larson's original accompaniment for piano, plus the optional flute, oboe, French horn and cello perfectly capture the somber mood. This top-seller is now available in SATB, SAB, Two-Part Mixed voicings and a new Medium Voice Solo. The SATB version appears in Lloyd's blockbuster Lenten musical, "The Shadow of the Cross," newly re-voiced for SAB choirs.

I loved hearing this piece, the part I heard online. When I played through it later after receiving it in the mail, I found it to be a musically beautiful arrangement. To my surprise however, our minister rejected it on the basis of the text focusing too much on Jesus...

death on the cross being 'all about me'. On reflection, I realize this piece might work better for situations where expressions of faith can be deeply emotional and directed to listeners on a personal level.

I was looking for a piece of music that was not too hard but simple and elegant enough to get the message through. I used this piece with our small choir at church for Palm Sunday and again for Maundy Thursday.
