his work was commissioned by the Fort Lewis College Chamber Orchestra of Durango, Colorado, and premiered by that ensemble in 2015. The composition is a musical portrait of the Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings and an homage to the mysterious Cliff Dwellers who inhabited the region from approximately 450-1300 AD, only to vanish without explanation. The musical essay is divided into sections focusing on particular aspects of the Mesa Verde life: “The Land,” “The People,” and “The Sky.” Each section employs highly descriptive musical language to capture these narrative affects. Approaching the composition’s end, the tempo increases into a joyous celebration of the stars, the climax of the music, but a quiet ending speaks to the stillness that remains today. Duration: 7:00
