This is an audience-pleaser. Clever writing, familiar tune, nice instrumentation. It provides a certain degree of challenge, especially for the bassoonist, and the chromatic passagework requires capable instrumentalists all around, but it is a piece that sets up relatively quickly for the ensemble.

I recently purchased this quintet in mind that the students involved would enjoy it, and they do very much. The bassoon part will have your middle school student working to keep the fingering correct, and the "triplet chromatics" (3/8 time) are fun to learn and makes the chromatic scale...

easiear to play for your student. I'd say it is a middle-school level quintet because it gets the students interested in the music and has them working hard on it, improving their playing skills. It would be alright for a high school quintet, but I find it would be too easy for them.
