The Parting Glass is one of the most beautiful and wistful melodies to come from the Celtic music tradition. The earliest printed source of the melody is in a Scottish collection, but it is also very popular in Ireland.Â
The theme of the song is the gesture of hospitality and sadness when loved ones leave. The song invites them to share a final drink 'The Parting Glass' to fortify themselves on their travels.
My setting is suitable for intermediate level players. It works beautifully for classical or steel string guitars. I have avoided the need for barre chords by setting the music in higher positions, using cross-string fingerings. This also gives a harp-like sound which seems appropriate for the style.
A video of The Parting Glass will be uploaded to YouTube soon. To see and hear a huge range of music, for all levels from beginners' pieces to music for professional players, as well as a wealth of music in ensemble, please visit: www.danjonesguitarist.com.
