The core repertoire of low string instruments would not be the same without Johann Sebastian Bach's three gamba sonatas, which hark back to other works by him that were originally scored for different performing forces. They all share a strict three-part texture (gamba and two-voice keyboard). Today the sonatas are mostly played on the cello, which can assimilate the gamba's original music changed.

Mixed bag of Bach
I bought this to get a quality edition using alto clef for the gamba part. The part is well laid out and readable with intelligent use of a fold-out page for the two longest movements, but I think the editing is very questionable. Phrase markings have been taken from the sources with no thought to performance issues they raise in several cases, and the policy on missing accidentals is annoyingly pedantic. Yet the editor supplies bow markings and fingerings that reflect a personal approach that may not suit your own habits. Such a mixture of scholarly and personal requires a lot of re-editing by any serious performer. I'm surprised at these practices from Henle.

Nice complement to Bach Suites
Cellists have a more limited repertoire compared to violinists, and many feel Bach's Cello Suites are a huge blessing. But, what else can a cellist play from Bach? This book is one of the best answers. I can pick up the music easily after the Suites and amazingly there're ideas that I can bring back to perform on the Suites, too.
