"Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling." Raymond Brown's inspired new setting of this traditional hymn text has become a contemporary favorite, recorded by such artists as Cynthia Clawson and Selah. Now, Tom Fettke has adapted Brown's setting for church choir, with accessible choral lines and a gently flowing accompaniment. The expressive opening gradually builds through use of different textures to a soaring final stanza before tranquilly stating Jesus' calling: "Oh sinner, come home.".

When a parishioner dies, I work with the family in choosing a new choir anthem in memory of their loved one. "Softly and Tenderly" was requested recently. I was delighted to find this version of that hymn. The new melody takes the "funeral" out of this hymn and gives it...

a new perspective. Not too difficult for my loyal choir of 9 adults.
