An accessible concert or contest piece with two "sibling" movements of similar structure, full of chromaticism and colorful, tonal harmonies and modulations. Each movement begins with an introduction followed by a slow presentation of a theme comprising a sequence of four repeating chords over a pedal bass note and variations of a melody. Each has a middle section featuring a lively, up-tempo variation of its theme before returning to the original variation and finally concluding with a resolute ending. Approximately 8.5 minutes.
