The hornpipe itself was a bit like an early clarinet, or chalumeau, with a bell made of horn. Later, these dances came to be particularly associated with sailors and the sea – possibly because the hornpipe survived the rough, wet conditions of ocean life more successfully than other instruments.
The reason for the Sheffield Hornpipe’s association with the English city is unclear. However, to this day, the area has a high concentration of Morris dance teams – so folk dance clearly plays an important part in local culture.
This arrangement for semi-flexible woodwind trio of 2 flutes plus either B-flat clarinet or bassoon is ideal for players seeking a few lighter items for background music at a wedding or function, or perhaps to add to a concert programme.
