  • March 04, 2012 Nice book, but too advanced for learning

This book came with a recorder and I thought it was for learning how to play. The first couple of pages were great for first-time learning. Then it shows the fingering chart and throws you into highly advanced songs from Harry Potter. I had to put the book away...

, get another recorder learning book and learn all the notes including the sharps and flats before going back to this book. I'm starting to enjoy the songs now, but geez, I felt misled.

This 24p book (with 4 pieces from the 1st movie, and 1 from each of the next three), is for beginners, although the speed and dexterity required by a couple may stump beginners, hence the higher rating. Hedwig's Theme - the piece everyone wants - and Double Trouble are both enjoyable...

, and all are written in large format, which requires page turning for "Nimbus 2000." Since the first 8p is dedicated to the briefest introduction to recorder playing, only pp. 9-23 are actually dedicated to the HP music. What is missing? Chord and/or percussion accompaniment - there is certainly enough white space for them. Later movies will require new editions with more selections and improvements in a slightly smaller font. I recommend this book as a gift to children, perhaps 8-10 year olds and even to much older players, such as music teachers, who wish to impress a class around Hallowe'en.
