The miller, his son and the donkey is an old fable, first appearing in the 13th-century writings of the Islamic Iberian
historian and poet Ibn Said. There are many eastern versions of the tale and in Europe it was included in a number of Medieval collections including Aesop's fables.
This quintet is intended for outreach performances such as in schools or libraries.  The text is generally spoken (by the performers, written into their parts) and some extended techniques are included - fluttertongue and “jet whistle” effect, “lip down” and "bop" in the horn, key clicks on clarinet, bassoon playing on reed alone.
