Maurice Ravel's melancholy popular "Pavane for a Dead Princess" composed in 1899 was originally written for piano before he arranged it for orchestra in 1910. Though dedicated to a real princess, the Princesse de Polignac, the work does not refer to an actual historical person. For flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon.

I'm not usually a fan of arrangements (especially for woodwind quintets), but this one is just simply beautiful. It's in the original key, which is great for those who are familiar with it. The only "complaint" I had was from my hornist who said the part isn't...

in F. I give this an "intermediate/advanced" level rating because although the music is technically easy, it can be taxing on players' breathing. Delicate nuances, etc cannot be ignored in this work (even if it's an arrangement). What a gorgeous work.
