Virtuoso Douvas of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra continues the Oboe Classics series with these wonderful advanced-level solos on oboe. These cover the range from Baroque (Handel) to Twentieth Century Modernism (Hindemith), and includes two virtually unknown Romantic Era 'Solos de Concert' by Stanislas Verroust. A magnificent collection and a tremendous opportunity to advance to the highest levels of achievement. As a special bonus, this album includes a separate book containing the rare piano accompaniments to the Verroust 'Solos de Concert.' Includes a complete solo part printed on high-quality ivory paper, annotated with performance suggestions and a compact disc with complete versions (with soloist) followed by piano accompaniments to each piece, minus the soloist. Also includes a bonus book of piano accompaniments to the Verroust Solos de Concert. Performed by by Elaine Douvas, oboe Accompaniment: Erik Nielsen, piano.

  • Sonata for Oboe and Piano in G minor, op. 1, no. 6
  • 2nd Solo de Concert in G minor, op. 74
  • Sonata for Oboe and Piano (1938): II. Sehr langsam
  • Pastorale, op. 38
  • Escales Nr. 2: 'Tunis et Nefta'
  • 3rd Solo de Concert in F major, op. 76

Incredible
This series is incredible. Ms. Douvas is quite open about how she disagrees with the titles of the MMO series. Rather than naming them Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced, she likes to call them Encores, Advanced and Professional. The recordings are gems.

A better review.
I have always liked Douvas' tone quality. Very rich and lush. Unlike a more traditional English tone (usually more reedy), and possibly not ideal for baroque style. The value of her instructional approach probably depends on ones own previous teaching but I have found it usful.
