One of the world's greatest encore pieces, the “Meditation” comes from the opera Thaïs, written by French composer Jules Massenet in 1893. Thaïs is based on a novel by the French author Anatole France, which tells of a fourth-century Egyptian courtesan called Thaïs, who was converted to Christianity by a hermit monk who lived in the desert, and eventually became a saint. The opera was a great success, and stayed in the repertory of the Paris Opera continuously until 1956. In the opera, the piece serves as a symphonic intermezzo in Act II. Although in its original form it is essentially a violin solo, it has been transcribed for almost every conceivable instrument, and is often played at flute recitals.

This song is so beautiful. It's not difficult to get the notes down, but you've really gotta put some feeling in it to make it that much more beautiful. I loved it so much that I used this song to walk down to in my wedding.

  • June 27, 2008 Lovely -- An Ideal Encore Recital Selection

This is a popular one. I rate it "Intermediate/Advanced" -- and not just Intermediate -- because of the musical interpretation needed, to bring this piece to life. It goes to a High "A" in the last line. Otherwise, the range is comfy for an Intermediate player. The rhythm is easy -- just...

a few spots that can be easily worked out, after a few practice repetitions.

Very lovely piece that I think would be a nice encore selection, for a college flute recital. Although it is "intermediate" in its difficulty, an advanced student can truly play it so emotionally and with some "color" changes!
