The English text goes, "The shepherds run quickly to Bethlehem; they all go in a line, with broken shoes. Ay! Let's sing and dance with the tambourine and bagpipe." The accompaniment imitates the sound of drums and the voices state the simple folk melody in unison, two-part counterpoint, then in three part canon.
Accessible to a good high school, college, or church treble ensemble. May be augmented with hand drum, triangle, finger cymbal, or other percussion. Running time: approximately 3:30.
