Chamber Music Trumpet
Arranged by Claude Gordon. Perfect Bound. Instructional book. With Standard notation. 367 pages. Carl Fischer Music #O457. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.O457).

Item Number: CF.O457

ISBN 9780825803307. 9x12 inches.

First published in 1870, the Grand Method by Louis A. Saint-Jacome (1830-1898) is one of the two pillars of modern trumpet pedagogy. Along with Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet (O21), the Grand Method has provided trumpet students and players with the necessary tools for mastery of the instrument for generations. Cleaned up, corrected and restored to its original completeness by Claude Gordon shortly before his death in 1996, this new edition is a gold mine of exercises and instructional information (now including the Duets and Studies by Saint-Jacome and Bousquet as edited by Edwin Franko Goldman). This new edition of Grand Method is an instructional method that belongs in every trumpet player's library.

  • February 26, 2010 In my opinion it's the best.

I enetered the Royal Marines in 1966 and was trained using this method, alonside others, for four years. I have been using the method eversince. I play daily and use the method continuously for myself and my students. It is progressive and has many great exercises and studies. Also the...

duets are second to none. i would recommend this to any aspiring brass player.

This book holds the dubious distinction of being the second (and mostly forgotten) best trumpet "Bible" of all time after Arban's method. Saint Jacome's book clearly influenced such geniuses as Herbert L. Clarke and Claude Gordon, who incorporated a lot of ideas in their own works. But the...

sad fact remains, as excellent as this book is overall, the eccentric, bewildering layout of exercises has made it an also-ran. That's a shame because it contains some spectacularly good stuff (much better exercises on articulation, range, and flexibiity than Arban's and some fine duets) and the terrific Bousquet Studies. I think that overall, this book is probably more difficult than Arban's method, but I highly recommend rediscovering this wonderful work.
