Published by JMS Composer (A0.749356)."Equinox" – a 16-minute 5-movement concerto for solo alto flute and flute choir – was composed specifically for low-flute specialist Peter Sheridan and UNO’s Heartland Community Flute Choir. "Equinox" has a story behind it, revolving around a young girl figuring out what it means to believe. After a great morning hunt on the first day of Spring, everyone returns to a small village to celebrate and pray in thanks to the spirits of the world (I. As One Awakes). A celebratory dance is held that evening, where everyone except the Chieftain's daughter joins in. She, however, has been questioning what it means to believe in what the others do, and whether she is truly believing because she believes or just because others expect her to (II. Celebration of the Dance). The next day, tragedy strikes when the Chieftain is killed on the next hunt; he pleads for his daughter to understand why this must happen. However, she runs out of the village, uncertain of what will happen next and questioning her place in life (III. A New Dawn). As she continues to try and explore why she feels existence is out to destroy her, she begins to notice the world around her reacts to every movement she makes and action she takes. For a moment, this recognition allows her to see her father's spirit standing over her, as well as those long dead who continue to support her. She takes solace in this and heads back to the village when she hears the drums beginning a new dance in remembrance of her father's life (IV. Visions of Spirits). She returns and takes her place in leading the dance, but this is a different dance than the villagers have previously seen, as the Chieftain's daughter has a new take on life and what it means to believe. This creates a much more emotional dance as she experiences her own personal beliefs for the first time (V. The Dance). A more in-depth description of the story is included within the score. "Equinox" is scored for Solo Alto Flute, with a full choir of 2 Piccolos, 4 C Flutes, Alto Flute, and Bass Flute supporting. The Solo part is challenging and pushes the instrument to both high and low ranges. The choir parts are heavily intertwined, posing their own challenges while weaving in and out behind the Solo. "Equinox" was written in August/September of 2015, with heavy rehearsals with the Heartland Community Flute Choir in January and February. The score here includes all changes made during rehearsals to make performances flow better. Enjoy - and please let me know if you perform this! This is my favorite work - so far!
