By Jan and Dean. By Brian Wilson. Arranged by Jan Berry. This edition: audio, pdf, streaming. Pop, Rock. 46 pages. Fiji Printing #641125. Published by Fiji Printing (A0.1036032).
Jan Berry's original music score, used by Wrecking Crew studio musicians to record the original track in 1963-64. A Top-10 hit for Jan & Dean in the spring of 1964 (#8 Billboard; #9 Cash Box).
Transcribed by Mark A. Moore from Jan Berry's music archive, in association with his estate. Moore is the author of Dead Man's Curve: The Rock 'n' Roll Life of Jan Berry (McFarland 2021) and The Jan & Dean Record (McFarland 2016).
The brass-and-woodwind arrangement for "Dead Man's Curve" is the horn arrangement Jan is most famous for. But it's also the most buried on the studio recording, and thus not clearly heard. In this transcription recording, however, you can hear Jan's horn arrangement in all its glory-dense and brooding.
Jan wrote a master arrangement for "Dead Man's Curve" from which he crafted both the studio version, and the version used for live performances.
Fewer horn players were used for the studio recording.
The horn parts for "Won't Come Back from Dead Man's Curve" were tacet (not played) on the studio recording, but they were played for live performances.
The hard ending was used for live performances, but the song faded on the studio recording.
Note the "Taps" motif at the end. Maybe, in Jan's mind, the aggressive driver of the Jaguar XKE who instigated the race, and who was killed in the crash, was a soldier. But maybe not. "Taps" is recognized worldwide in remembrance of the dead.
"Dead Man's Curve" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.
