Ideal for use in Lent and on other penitential occasions, "Create in Me a Clean Heart" is an excerpt from Psalm 51, which is recited as part of the Ash Wednesday liturgy in Roman Catholic, Anglican, and many other churches:
 
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence,
and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of thy salvation,
and uphold me with thy free spirit. 
 
In this setting for SATB voices and organ, verses 10-12 of the psalm are first sung by solo voice (male or female) accompanied by organ, then repeated by all voices, which may be a capella (preferable) or lightly accompanied. Verse 10 is then repeated by soloist and choir to conclude the anthem.
