  • April 27, 2011 Great piece for Teaching & Performance

This is one of my favorite pieces of Trumpet repertoire. Incredibly beautiful melodic ideas mixed with brief moments of quick, light, and brilliant technique.I use excerpts from this piece to audition young players wanting to make a chair in my top wind group. This piece does not demand virtuosic...

range, but requires a great amount of endurance and musicality.Wonderfully romantic 19th century writing style over some lush, modern harmonies and accompaniment (which, btw - the piano accompaniment part is fantastic).

  • April 08, 2009 Virtuosic yet highly melodic

Let me say that this is one of the most difficult pieces I have ever played. Not THE most difficult, but its octave + P5th leaps, melodic double tonguing, and rapid 2 octave arpeggios, not to mention the need for an extremely solid concert "C" are nothing to scoff at. However...

, I find that the payoff is well worth it. There comes a point of diminishing returns where good melodic and harmonic writing is overshadowed by the techniques required by the piece. This piece is right at that point, a near-perfect balance of beautiful musical content and blow-your-pants-off difficulty. To me, it sounds like a romantic trumpet concerto, something conspicuously absent from the literature. In short, if you have fundamentally sound technique and you don't own this piece, you should buy it. It translates well to audiences and yet has enough demanding aspects to keep you busy.

  • November 17, 2008 GREAT ROMANTIC MUSIC!!!

WARNING: This piece is HARD! Beautiful, Romantic music, but it has a lot of technical challenges and very little rest. Fingers, tongue, and chops required, but (if you can pull it off) one of my favorite pieces for solo trumpet.
