Brass Quintet
Composed by Johannes Brahms (1833–1897). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Romantic Period, Christian, Sacred, Graduation. Score, Set of Parts. 13 pages. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (S0.82923).

In 1870, Johannes Brahms found a theme entitled "Chorale St. Antoni." It was part of a wind ensemble composition attributed to Joseph Haydn, so when Brahms completed his theme and variations based on this melody in 1873, it was titled, “Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn.” In the orchestral version, Brahms stayed true to the original and arranged the theme primarily for wind instruments, but added cellos and basses to augment the bass line. Later research indicated that Haydn probably wrote neither the original composition nor the "St. Anthony Chorale" part of it. Nevertheless, Brahms’ framing of this theme is both beautifully simple and elegant, and this arrangement successfully translates that quality into a warm and appealing five-instrument version.

This arrangement was completed in 2014 and runs about 1 minute, 41 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, can be reached at For more arrangements by Les, type the following into the sheetmusicplus Search box: Sweetwater Brass Press. For more arrangements by Les, direct your web browser to
