Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979624).Appalachian Awakening (for violin soloist, 5 wind instruments, and jazz rhythm section) is a highly unusual composition in how it combines bossa nova and Appalachian-style fiddle music. The bossa nova has rich ensemble writing and harmonic voicings. When the old-time fiddle kicks in it is sure to get the audience on its feet. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by many combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music.
