What's the point of Bossa Nova without the lyrics in Portuguese? I should have paid more attention to the sample page.

  • October 02, 2008 Great Brazillian Feel

The bossa nova pieces in this book are very nice to hear and play. I bought this book to play at my nieghbors Brazillian party and all of the guests loved it. There favorite (and mine) was the piece titled "The Girl from Ipanema." They loved the alto sax sound...

. I have been playing for 7 years, and out of those 7 years, i have played in 5 years of jazz band. We play some bossa novas but not much, and the pieces in here are easier to read rather than a high school jazz band. They are pretty simple to sight-read if you have been playing for about 4-5 years, but you have got to know how to feel the music! There is a ton of improvisation in this book? Know the chords or just take little pieces from the melody line. In one piece the average is about 40 bars of improvisation. Overall this book is excellent in the choice of songs: "Desafinado," Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars," "Once I Loved," and other great bossa novas. Hope this helped.

  • October 02, 2007 Swing with the best

Great practice tool for everybody who loves jazz. Two versions of each tune gives you an opportunity to hear unfamiliar tunes first, or just comp to the soloist. Hereafter you are on your own on the next version. And the band swings great.

  • February 26, 2007 Excellent Bossa Nova Lead Sheets

This book gives you the heart of Bossa Nova. It is a great resource. So, why not 5 stars? Well, the lead sheets will take you only so far. You still need to know the chords and the Bossa Nova rhythms. The (included) CD certainly helps. A couple of Stan...

Getz or Astrid Gilberto albums would help more. Look at it this way: It's a growth experience. The arrangements I have worked out so far will be part of my permanent repertoire.

  • February 13, 2007 Nice arrangements, bad editing

The arrangements in this book are fun to play and the volume is a good introduction to the style of music. Musicians crossing over from classical music may find the editing irritating; conventions on using flats or sharps are not followed which is suprisingly confusing if you're used to...

playing music which follows strict rules about this.
