By Gerald Near

Composed by Gerald Near (1942-). Chant-Based, Offertories, Preludes, Postludes. Advent, Christmas, Epiphany. Aureole Editions #AE119. Published by Aureole Editions (MN.AE119).

Item Number: MN.AE119

The first book in a four volume set of organ pieces based on Gregorian chant melodies. The entire collection is keyed to the three-year lectionary shared by all liturgical denominations and will, when complete, present chant-based music for every sunday and major feast of the liturgical calendar. Organists serving non-liturgical churches will find these collections an invaluable resource for service preludes and offertories (there are a few postludes, too).

    Difficulty Level:
  • January 01, 2011 Organ music based on chant

Organ music based on some of the 'Proper' parts of the latin chant masses for Advent through Epiphany [includes Christmas!]. Indexed by the particular Sundays, using the nomenclature of Catholics, Lutherans and Episcopalians. ['Epiphany 1' = 'Baptism of the Lord']. 19 compositions based on chant Introits, Graduals, Alleluias, Offertories and Communions...

. Each piece includes the title of the chant on which it's based, the biblical source of the text, the part of the Mass it comes from, its Mode, and its performance time. This music can be used for preludes, meditative interludes, or communion music in any church service, since the chant modes sound inherently religious no matter the denomination of the hearers. The composer has added dotted barlines to help the neophyte not use to reading chant music.
