This famous text is beautifully set to music by Texas music educator and composer Laura Farnell. The long, lush phrases of In the Bleak Midwinter help teach breathing and dynamics while the tempo and legato style allows time to focus on vowels and tone, both within unison and multi-part setting. Repetition of parts make the dissonances easy to learn. The text has been adapted to keep religious aspects as general as possible for school performances. Beautiful arrangement that supports the voices
We used this piece for a soloist during a Lessons and Carols service at church. Neither I, the director, nor the solist or the keyboardist are highly advanced musicians, intermediate amateurs at best. The piano arrangement is very nice, providing support for the vocalist without being distracting. It is very nicely balanced between being sparse and having enough flourishes to keep the piece interesting. One of the best arrangements I've heard. My daughter, the soloist, used another arrangement to sing this previously and likes this one better.
