Joyful horns open Bach’s cantata Darzu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes (For this the Son of God has appeared), BWV 40, first performed on 26 December 1723. Unusual here are the two internal chorales inserted between the recitatives and their corresponding arias. The second aria is distinguished by some exquisite scoring for horns and oboes without strings. The accompanying recitative "Die Schlange, so im Paradies" (The serpent which in Paradise) is animated by an uninterrupted "snaking" motif performed by the strings. The cantata concludes with a third chorale movement.
