    I'm an adult who has taken voice lessons for a few years, and this is a good learning tool for intermediate level. The CD is helpful, and so are the notes on the composer, history of the composition, and the pronunciation of the Italian.

    Most of these "arie antiche" are widely accepted and used as teaching pieces for students just beginning to sing classical music. Paton's edition is far more solid than the Schirmer, and includes IPA transcriptions and notes on pronunciation. These books are indispensable for voice teachers, and I recommend them...

    for any high school or college student who is serious about singing classical music.

    The selections are great, the translations helpful, and the Italian language notes are fantastic, however, for the music in this book is really not suitable for altos. I sing alto II and most of the songs were just a bit too high out of my range.
