Yes, the page turns could be better but they weren't great in the original edition. And it would have been nice if the title of each work appeared as a header on each page. But, the 'engraving' is uniform and very easy to read. The clarinet part, e.g...

., is now 79 pages vs. 72 in the original. Every piece now has copious line numbers and rehearsal marks (though the rehearsal letters in the original edition haven't been carried over to the new edition) All the horn parts have been transposed for F horn and there is an A clarinet supplement for 8 selections (though you have to write to Hal Leonard to get it as it still isn't available on Southern Music's web site.) Additionally, the Table of Contents for each instrument now has correct page numbers. And there is now a score with brief notes by Neidich about each of the pieces / composers. And what of the content? Neidich has made numerous corrections. I've posted some of his Foreword here:http://bit.ly/2sMdGRU

  • October 24, 2016 What were they thinking?

The original imprint of this superb collection desperately needed to be re-typeset and printed. The original edition basically used copies of the original editions and some of the parts are hard to read. Accidentals, note flags and a lot more were difficult to decipher. So along comes this newly...

typeset and corrected edition. So what's wrong? THE PAGE TURNS ARE IMPOSSIBLE!!!! How in the world could a publisher make such a stupid, careless mistake like this. In the original version, page turns were not a problem. Now, they're everywhere in every part. They tried to cram too much on each page. Even the fun Barthe Passacaille is now spread over two pages. So this new edition forces you to photocopy a lot of pages to make page turns possible. Ironically, at the bottom of each page is a warning about how it's illegal to copy this music. And...since most of this music in now in Public Domain, how can they really enforce their copyright notice? Terrible wasted opportunity.
