Bert Appermont composed Song for Sakiko during a stay in the cosmopolitan metropolis of Tokyo. “Sakiko” roughly translated means “flower child” and is associated with a dreamy, poetic atmosphere. Appermont used these associations as a starting point while composing. Song for Sakiko starts with a very lyrical theme based on a minor third that forms the basis for the entire work. A second theme builds up to the grand finale, which repeats the theme, but in a major key and the music slowly fades away, like ripples on a pond, as both themes can be heard dissipating into nothingness.

Het was tijdens zijn verblijf in de wereldstad Tokyo dat de componist inspiratie kreeg voor het schrijven van dit werk. Sakiko betekent ‘bloesemkind’ en roept een dromerige, poëtische sfeer op. Deze sfeer is het die de componist muzikaalwil verbeelden. Song for Sakiko begint met een zangerig thema. Deze is gebaseerd op een kleine terts die de basis vormt van het werk. Een tweede thema leidt naar een grootse tutti. Hier wordt het beginthema in gewijzigdevorm in majeur gespeeld. Daarna deint de muziek uit terwijl beide thema’s nog even vaag weerklinken.

Song for Sakiko beginnt mit einem sängerischen Thema, das auf einer kleinen Terz basiert, welche die Grundlage des gesamten Werkes bildet. Ein zweites Thema führt zu einem großen Tutti, wobei das Anfangsthema in veränderter Form in Dur gespielt wird. Danach klingt die Musik in Wellen langsam aus, während beide Themen noch kurz vage widerhallen.

Puis, les deux thèmes s’estompent progressivement, tel le mouvement oscillatoire des vagues.
