This book presents a method for learning extended first position on the cello. With exercises and relevant short pieces, the beginning of the book addresses first-finger extensions, followed by fourth-finger extensions in the second half. Cello Stretching is an exhaustive manual for working on the technique of extensions, with many of the exercises designed to help the cellist easily move between open and closed hand positions. Cello extensions are best studied over a period of time so that the hand can gradually get used to reaching past closed position without tension. Cello Stretching provides a study of extensions followed by ample practice material for continued work. This book might be studied along with Playing in Keys for Cello, Book One, which focuses on the keys in which first position extensions are used.

Provides plenty of practice
I like using this book with my students to provide the much needed practice, both extending back as well as forward or to a higher position. Most beginning books introduce it and don't give the needed incrementally challenging practice. After every page of exercises, there are pieces that apply the technique. Highly recommended!
