20 Modern Studies for Solo Saxophone

The pieces in this book range from grade 2 to grade 8 in the system familiar to players in the UK, Australia and some other countries. They are arranged progressively (i.e. from easy harder). Most of them are grade 5 to 8. So this is a book for the learner who is making good progress towards the intermediate level or who has already reached that level. The preface says that the book is intended to familarise the saxophonist with the various rhythms and phrasing encountered in modern music, and that it ranges from Jazz, Rock and Funk to Contemporary Classical. That seems an accurate description. The rhythms can be challenging. I find some of these rhythms harder than anything, for example, in the Book 2 of the Lacour studies. In fact, I use these books side by side. Before I took up this book I had worked mainly on the Rossari, Parisi and Lacour studies. The material in Rae is more contemporary, and I find that it complements these other books well.
