In creating a choral arrangement of this song in 2011, I endeavored to remain as true as possible to the composer's vocal score from 1894, and to his chamber orchestra score from 1897. The melody in the soprano voice is untouched as is piano accompaniment. The orchestration is nearly all that of the composer except for a couple of notes in the low strings which were added to adjust for the inclusion of choral voices. The English singing translation is my own. The choral harmonies are very much in keeping with the musical language of this gorgeous piece. It is to be hoped that the warmth they bring will add even more richness to what is already a sumptuous song. -Stanley M. Hoffman.
