This piece is sung by the villain, John Ratcliffe, as he begins his quest for gold and riches in the new world. There is also a second section featuring the character John Smith, an explorer who is looking for new adventure and beauty in the new world (he eventually becomes the love interest for Pocahontas).
I hope you and your orchestra have fun performing this piece, as it is one of my favorites and has a fun feeling of decadence and villainy in a style that Disney does best!
