If he is known at all, then generally Reichardt is known primarily as a Lied composer. This first edition of the full score of the Weihnachtskantilene makes this work for large ensemble once again accessible. This simple, homophonic setting in 16 movements is scored in some sections for double choir, whereby the higher choir can be performed effectively by a children's choir. Not least in importance is the moving poetry by Matthias Claudius, which helps to make Reichardt's work a rewarding and attractive enrichment to the traditional Christmas repertoire.
